Gardener / horticulture instructor

The Fifth Trust is a day centre for adults with learning disabilities that operates commercial businesses alongside students’ day centre activities. In addition to a large range of skills classes and activities the Centre operates a fully commercial Garden Centre, Tea Shop, provides Garden maintenance services to the local community, has a vegetable allotment which services the Tea Shop and the cookery classes, and maintains a small vineyard.

Function

To work in the horticulture department within the garden maintenance team. Working with small groups of adults with learning disabilities to assist them with the jobs that they do each day. Taking students off site to work in local customer’s gardens, tending to plants, cutting grass, hedges, weeding and general garden maintenance.

Person specification

  • You will need to be fully comfortable in training and working with our students. A good all round knowledge of horticulture skills is essential.
  • Previous gardening experience essential.
  • Able to work within a diverse team.   
  • Good time keeping is essential.
  • Can do attitude to work, adaptable with working practices.
  • To follow the aims and principles of the Trust
  • Clean driving licence.
  • Good people skills.
  • Willingness to progress in the company.

Key relationships: Horticulture Manager / General Manager / The Trustees

Hours of work: 40 hours per week (some weekend work will be required and discussed at interview.)  A full CRB will be required, training will be given. 

Salary: £7.83 per hour

Objectives                 

  • To undertake gardening duties on site and around the local area.
  • Liaise with customers and manage their gardening requirements.
  • All aspects of general garden maintenance carried out.
  • Good customer focus and ability to work under own supervision.
  • Working with small groups of students, manage your and the students health and safety and wellbeing.
  • Develop student horticulture skills by using your knowledge to teach while working together.
  • Take responsibility for the day’s work ahead, be able to work un supervised.
  • Keen to learn and progress in your role.
  • Offer fun working sessions for students.
  • Record keeping of the day’s activities.

Cafe Vacancy

The Fifth Trust is a charity providing meaningful work opportunities for adults with learning disabilities. The Vineyard In The Valley Café supports our students every weekday. All staff need to be caring and sensitive as well as highly professional in their work. The Fifth Trust will support all staff who show the right skills in continuing their professional development in both care and catering/hospitality. Our aim is for everyone to fulfil their potential, both students and staff.

Responsibilities to include: -

Serving Tea/coffee, cooking breakfast, lunch and preparing afternoon teas.

Meeting and greeting customers and providing a friendly professional table service.

Able to prioritise workload.

Keep the Café clean and tidy.

The candidate should be very presentable and able to work as part of a team and able to take instructions from the Café Manager

Catering Experience necessary

Food Hygiene Certificate desirable.

Hrs:- 24 per week to include every other week end (this could be flexible).

An exciting opportunity for a person with a love of the outdoors, a passion for horticulture and the ability to encourage and engage adults with learning difficulties in the many and varied tasks to be undertaken within our busy Horticulture Department.

Volunteering

We are always looking for good reliable volunteers who can help out in the horticulture department, if you have a passion for gardening, plants or general horticulture then I would very much like to hear from you.

The horticulture department consists of a vineyard, garden centre, large vegetable allotments, a large nursery site, three garden maintenance teams and a class room.

At the moment we have five volunteers who work either a morning, afternoon or all day in their chosen area of the horticulture department.
